U Flecku is Prague’s oldest beer hall and has made a name for itself by making dark, delicious lager and having a very unique atmosphere. The building which houses U Flecku was built in 1499 and has been preserved throughout the years to carry the look of an old style, European beer hall.
There are several rooms in U Flecku with each featuring its own look and the rooms included are Knights Hall, Academy Hall, Ancient Czech Hall, Large Lounge, Traveling-case, Cabaret Hall, Sausage, Vaclav’s Room, and Hop-garden.
With room names such as Sausage and Hop-garden, U Flecku naturally does more than just act as a bar. They are also a restaurant and brewery, but these play second fiddle to the bar aspect of U Flecku. The beer served here is excellent and can make a non-beer drinker reconsider their stance on the matter. And the best thing about this great beer is that it’s reasonably priced considering how good it is.
One major negative about U Flecku is that the waiters and waitresses are very pushy with shots of liquor and they will hound customers to drink them along with the beer. You’ll have to tell the server “no” at least five times before they will take the shots back and not charge you for them. When you do convince them to take the expensive shots back they’re not too friendly about it.
Getting back to the positives, the food here is pretty good and U Flecku offers people chicken, duck, pork, sausage, steak, and various salads. People are rarely disappointed after dining at U Flecku provided they’re not vegetarians. Customers can also expect to be entertained while they’re eating by an accordion player who will play a song from your home country after visiting.
Those who are looking for more than a bar will enjoy the brewery tour which offers people a glance at the micro-brewery and a chance to taste test the beer. One thing a person must keep in mind about this 50 minute tour is that the guide only speaks German.
Going beyond the seemingly forced shots and sometimes rude service, U Flecku is a great place to dine, drink beer, or take a tour. It’s especially good for tourists who are looking to experience a traditional European beer hall.
