Good Fast and Cheap
People often speak of the idea that there are generally three things you want when trying to make something happen: you want it to be good, fast and cheap. However, they also say that the truth is that you can only have two of these things exist at once and that you cannot have the third. For instance, if you are remodeling your kitchen, it can be good and fast, but it won’t be cheap. Or, it can be fast and cheap, but it won’t be good. Or, it can even be good and cheap, but it won’t be fast. You can imagine how you could apply this theory to nearly anything.

Establishment And Achievements
The idea to establish a zoological park in Prague was put forward by Count Sweerts-Spork in 1881 on the occasion of the wedding of Prince Rudolf of Austria and Princess Stephanie of Belgium. In 1919, a committee was established at the meeting of the board for mathematics and natural sciences at the Ministry of Education and National Enlightenment. This was done to start the basic preparatory work for building the Prague Zoo. On the 28th of September 1931 the zoo was opened for the public. In the year 1938, the zoo was the proud owner of the first young Andean vulture in the world. It was hatched and reared in the zoo. In 1942, for the first time in the world a polar bear cub was artificially bred. In 2001, the first artificial breeding of the Przewalski Horse took place in the Prague Zoo. The zoo has contributed a lot to saving the Przewalski Horse. It is also the biggest breeder of the horse species in the world. Dr. Zdeněk Veselovský took over as the zoo director in 1959. This was the turning point in Prague Zoo history. Under the guidance of Dr. Veselovský the Prague Zoological Park has achieved immense success in the field of scientific research and breeding. A tragedy stuck in 2002 when Prague was hit by floods. This led to death of many animals. However the zoo recovered from the loss soon.
In November of 2005, the Prague Zoo in association with the Czech Television and the Czech Radio started a multimedia project called “The Revealed”. The project had three main aims:
  • To show the public the success the Zoo has achieved with breeding gorillas.
  • To raise money to protect gorillas living in nature.
  • To present a reality show with meaning unlike shows such as Big Brother, which was part of a TV commercial at that time.
The project was a huge success and was very popular among the masses. It won the Panda Award at the Wild Screen Festival in Bristol. It was also a great promotion for the zoo and it is still going on.

Main Attractions
The Prague Zoo is one of the most visited zoological parks in the world. It attracts around 1.3 million visitors every year. It has a picturesque quality with views ranging from lush green meadows to rocky mountains to steep valleys. You can have a look at most of the areas in about 4-5 hours. You can enjoy seeing animals in their natural habitat. Animals range from penguins, tigers, elephants, sea lions, ibex and giraffes. Two of the most visited and enjoyed pavilions are the Indonesian Jungle and the Monkey Island. Here you can enjoy the wide variety of luxurious jungle flora and fauna. The children’s area and the Children's Zoo is another special attraction of the zoo. This is a special farm where children can play with different tamed animals like rabbits, sheep, pigs, hens, ponies and geese. Kids can also buy low calorie granules from slot machines and feed the animals.

Reaching The Zoo
The Prague Zoological Park attracts thousands of visitors every day. This sometimes leads to full parking lots, cars being parked anywhere and visitors coming in packed buses. To tackle the situation the Zoo has launched a Zoo bus. It is an excellent service and goes every ten minutes on weekends. You can take the bus from Nadrazi Holesovice (Metro C) to Troja and back without any changing of buses. It also has a provision to keep all its passengers occupied. You can watch movies or zoo information on the LCD television in the bus which will keep you entertained.
You can also drive to the zoo. It is a very easy route following signs to Nadrazi Holesovice and then to the Zoo. However care should be taken as you may not get parking space due to heavy visitor traffic.
If you don’t want to take the road then you can take a boat to Pristaviste Troja, cross the bridge to Vltava and go around Trojsky Zamek. A 25 minute walk from the Trojan Castle will take you to the zoo.
You can take the metro to Nadrazi Holesovice and then take Bus No. 112 to terminus.
