Good Fast and Cheap
People often speak of the idea that there are generally three things you want when trying to make something happen: you want it to be good, fast and cheap. However, they also say that the truth is that you can only have two of these things exist at once and that you cannot have the third. For instance, if you are remodeling your kitchen, it can be good and fast, but it won’t be cheap. Or, it can be fast and cheap, but it won’t be good. Or, it can even be good and cheap, but it won’t be fast. You can imagine how you could apply this theory to nearly anything.

Health Care and Health Insurance
No one wants to get sick, especially when on vacation or in a foreign country. If you do happen to become ill while in Prague, there are a number of options available to you. Here is some basic information regarding health care and health insurance in the Czech Republic.
More Information
Vaccinations
Unless you are coming from an infected area, you will not need any vaccinations to visit the Czech Republic.

Emergency Services
Emergency treatment and first aid is free to everyone visiting Prague. So, if you break your leg in an accident, do not worry about how much it is going to cost.

Medical Treatment
If you are a citizen of the European Union, you may receive inexpensive (or free) medical treatment while you are in Prague. This service is part of the reciprocal health care treaties. Some other countries have arranged similar international agreements, so you should check with the appropriate authority in your own country to see if you will receive inexpensive medical treatments when you are in Prague. If you are not covered, you will most likely have to pay for your medical treatment up front. However, there is health insurance available to you, so that may help reduce the cost of any medical treatment. More on that later.

Prescriptions
Everyone in Prague is required to pay for prescribed medications. If you are on any medications, it is best you come with enough to hold you over while you are in Prague, just to be safe.

Ambulances/Health Facilities
Ambulance services operate 24 hours a day in Prague, and most health facilities are open every day from seven in the morning until six at night. Of course, 24 hour emergency care is available to those in desperate need.

Foreign Medical Clinics
Most staff members of state hospitals will speak little to no English. If you speak little to no Czech, it is in your best interest to go to a Foreign Medical Clinic if you need medical treatment. The care between the two is the same; however, there will be no language barrier in a Foreign Medical Clinic, and it may be easier for you to obtain the care you need. If you do visit a Foreign Medical Clinic, you will need your passport and proof of valid medical insurance before any treatment can be administered to you. If you do not have insurance, you will need either enough cash to cover the cost of the treatment, or you will need a valid credit card.

Health Insurance
If you already have health insurance, you will most likely be covered by it when you visit Prague.  However, it is best to check with your provider regarding the fees you may incur if you are receiving any medical treatment “out-of-network.”  They can sometimes be quite high.
If you do not have any insurance, you may be able to obtain some from a Czech insurance provider for a relatively low cost.  For example, many Czech insurance companies offer quality insurance to foreigners that is comparable to the insurance of Czech citizens.  Some of the services covered by this type of insurance include:
  • All the costs of hospital care.  You would not have to pay anything if you are admitted to a hospital.
  • All out patient treatments provided by a doctor.  Again, you would not have to pay anything.  However, you may have to pay a small fee for any prescriptions the doctor orders for you.
  • You can also have any dental work covered by your insurance.  Usually, you will have to pay the dentist, but then your insurance company will reimburse you for your expenses.
  • If you are pregnant, you can arrange for your insurance to cover the costs associated with childbirth, including delivery and care for the new-born child.
  • Your Czech-based insurance will also cover all mandatory vaccinations, inoculations, and contraceptive check-ups.
  • You may set-up your insurance to last anywhere from six months to one year, depending on how long you play to stay in Prague.  It usually begins the day after you have signed your insurance contract.
Most people enjoy being healthy.  That is especially true when you are traveling.  If you do become ill when you are Prague, there are a number of services available to you, including comprehensive health insurance.  Knowing these options should help relieve any stress you have regarding your health while you are in Prague, and that should help ensure you have a great time!
