Good Fast and Cheap
People often speak of the idea that there are generally three things you want when trying to make something happen: you want it to be good, fast and cheap. However, they also say that the truth is that you can only have two of these things exist at once and that you cannot have the third. For instance, if you are remodeling your kitchen, it can be good and fast, but it won’t be cheap. Or, it can be fast and cheap, but it won’t be good. Or, it can even be good and cheap, but it won’t be fast. You can imagine how you could apply this theory to nearly anything.

Good to know
Traveling to another country can be an exciting adventure.  It can also be a bit nerve-wracking, especially if you do not know much about the place you are visiting.  If you are planning on visiting Prague soon, it is helpful to know about the city before you even arrive.  Here is some information regarding getting around Prague you may find useful.    First, Prague has a very good public transportation system.  If you are traveling in the city, the best way to get around is by subway.  It is exceptionally easy to use, with the three major lines being color-coded green, yellow, and red..

Even if you cannot speak a single word of Czech, you will still be able to use the subway with relative ease.  All you have to do is follow the color-coded signs and maps.  The subway is also clean, and the wait-time between trains is short.   It really is the best way to get around Prague.  In fact, if you are traveling by car, it is recommended that you park your car in a lot near the outskirts of town and use the subway instead.  If you drive into the city, you may have a hard time finding a place to park, and once you do, you will probably have to spend a lot to keep your car there.  All in all, Prague’s subway is the best, easiest, least expensive way to get around the city.

Driving is an option, though, and if you do not have your own car, there are plenty of rental options for you (especially by the airport).  However, rental cars in Prague are quite expensive, and when you couple that expense with the hassle of actually driving in Prague, renting a car may not be the soundest option, either.

Of course, there is another way to get around Prague: taxi.  In truth, however, taxis may be the least effective mode of transportation in Prague, and if you decide to travel by taxi, you need to be careful – Prague’s taxis do not have the best reputation.  With that in mind, here are some tips to help you if choose to travel by taxi when you are in Prague.
  • Avoid taxis waiting at train stations or tourist sites.  These taxis charge higher rates and prey on unsuspecting tourists.
  • Before you enter a taxi, make sure it is registered.  You can be sure it is if the yellow roof lamp is permanently installed and it reads, “TAXI” in black on both sides.  Also, the license number, rates, and company name should be printed on the front doors.
  • If at all possible, find out the fare before you enter the taxi.  In Prague, you are allowed to ask the driver how much the ride will cost before you enter the cab, and you can even pay up-front if you wish.  This will help you prevent from being overcharged at the end of your trip.
  • When in the taxi, double check the rate on the meter and make sure it matches the price advertised on the taxi’s door.  If it does not, tell the driver to pull over and get out of the cab (as long as it is safe to do so).
  • Also, inside the vehicle there must be a taximeter and on the dashboard, the taxi driver‘s qualification certificate must be displayed (yellow, with the driver‘s photograph), giving his name and the operator‘s name.
  • When your ride is over, ask the driver for a printed receipt.  If he does not give you one, you do not have to pay the fare.
  • When at all possible, order your taxi over the phone.  You will be guaranteed a legitimate cab that way.
Traveling to a new city is usually a tremendous amount of fun.  However, if you do not prepare adequately, you may encounter some difficulties.  Before visiting Prague, take some time to familiarize yourself with all the different modes of transportation available to you.  If you do, you will have a great time.  Happy traveling!
